Are you aware there is a CAL OSHA regulation for preventing heat illness?

Employers are required to take 4 steps to prevent heat illness if their employees work outdoors or are exposed to excessive heat during their work.

1.  Employers must provide training to their employees about heat illness.
2.  Employers must provide enough fresh water so that each employee can drink at least one quart
per hour.
3.  Employers must provide access to shade for at least 5 minutes of rest when an employee believes
he needs a preventive recovery period.
4.  Employers must develop and implement written procedures for complying with the CAL/OSHA heat
illness prevention standard.

Whether you are at work or at home, be aware of the symptoms of heat illness which include: fatigue, heavy sweating, headache, cramps, dizziness, high pulse rate, nausea/vomiting.  Life threatening symptoms are high body temperature, red, hot, dry skin, confusion, convulsions and fainting.  To avoid suffering from heat illness:
  • Drink enough cool water (one 8 oz cup every 15 minutes, don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink)
  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine, choose water over soda
  • Take rest breaks in the shade to cool down
  • Wear loose fitting, light weight, light colored cotton clothes and a wide brimmed hat or cap
