$30M in Workers’ Comp Fraud-Fighting Funds Granted

State insurance commissioner Steve Poizner said Thursday that Santa Clara County will get nearly $2.2 million in grants to fight workers' compensation insurance fraud.

In all, $30 million will go to local county district attorneys this year, up “almost $1 million” from last year.

That includes nearly $3.4 million to the counties of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco and San Mateo.

Funding for the grants comes from as assessment on employers, which is determined by the Fraud Assessment Commission, the Department of Insurance said. Counties apply for the grants annually, and applications are reviewed by the Workers’ Compensation Grant Review Panel, which makes recommendations to the commissioner.

The commissioner can accept or amend the recommendations, which must then be approved by the Fraud Assessment Commission.
